On July 3, 1776, Founding Father John Adams, who became the second president of the United States, wrote a letter to his wife which every American should read and reflect upon, especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s birth.

As you read, keep in mind that on July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain. The actual document was formally approved two days later on July 4, 1776. For more info about the history of the signing, explore this link. Thus, as Adams writes to his wife, he is describing the immense importance of what just took place on July 2. After the vote to declare independence was settled, the ball was set in motion and America was on it’s way to becoming a country unlike any other–one where freedom would be cherished, and God’s hand of providence would lead. Though generations have celebrated on the 4th, Adams imagined it might take place on the 2nd because this was the day the vote occurred….

BELOW IS WHAT JOHN ADAMS WROTE:

The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.

You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and bloods and treasure that it will cost to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth more than all the means; that posterity will triumph in that day’s transaction, even though we may regret it, which I trust in God we shall not.

In many ways, Adams words were prophetic. To this day we still celebrate with shows, games, parties, and illuminations. The ravishing light and glory that he speaks of is a wonderful reminder of the blessings bestowed upon this nation by our Creator–the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s important to note that Adams writes to his wife that we should honor God on this day through “solemn acts of devotion.”

What would John Adams say about the America we live in today? Would he see the devotion spoken of in his letter? Sadly, I think he would be horrified at how the war that God helped us win has now turned into a war against the Almighty.

Adams famously stated, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

God is the only One who can make the people living in a nation moral because He is the author of that morality. Certainly, the trumpet has been blown many times to wake up our citizens. The watchmen on the wall have spoken. Will future generations enjoy the freedoms established through the original Declaration of Independence?

The answer to that question is simple–

if we trust God and remain devoted to Him, YES.

If we do not, NO.

This 4th of July it would be amazing if all the glory is given to God. Of course, the President of the United States, whose name is TRUMP, blew the trumpet when he declared that our nation be rededicated to God. Here are the details about that.

As citizens of this blessed country, we should all be taking the time to pray to God.

This 4th of July, let GOD be honored as we celebrate the freedom that He gave us.

Hallelujah Jesus! Thank you for guiding and protecting our nation. Wrap your mighty wings around the United States of America! WE LOVE YOU LORD!
